Prior Preparation
-
The MRI test does not require
restrictions on diet or medication. Refrain from having a
heavy meal, as it is sometimes difficult to lie flat with a
full stomach.
-
If scheduled for a test of the
abdomen/pelvis, do not eat or drink anything for at least
six hours prior to the test.
-
If sedation has been scheduled,
a full set of instructions will be provided. Please inform
us in advance if claustrophobic. This will enable us to
issue a set of guidelines to you in advance.
-
Wear comfortable clothing
without zippers or snaps. You may be asked to change into a
hospital smock.
-
Please avoid ornaments and face
or eye makeup.
-
Your child may eat or drink
prior to the test if no sedation is required. For small
children, we have found that they fall asleep more easily if
they have been kept up late the night prior and woken up
early on the day of the test.
-
Occasionally an intravenous
administration of contrast material (Gadolinium-chelate)
may be required. In such cases four hours of fasting is
recommended.
At the MRI Centre
-
On arriving at Coral Plaza
Imaging Center, please sign in at the reception desk of the
MRI centre.
-
You will be asked about your
medical history.
Question
you will be asked by our staff.
A consent form will have to be signed. Please inform the
staff in case you have ever had a foreign body in the eyes.
-
The scanning procedure will be
explained in detail.
-
You may have to change into a
hospital smock and you will be asked to remove metallic
objects.
-
MRI scans are not recommended
for pregnant women unless imperative.
-
At the end of your examination,
the receptionist will inform you as to when the scans could
be collected.
During the
Examination
-
The equipment may look
intimidating, but there is nothing to worry about. The tube
of the magnet is open at either end.
-
The technologist will position
you comfortably. The region to be scanned remains in the
centre of the tube.
-
The technologist can hear you
through an intercom and see you at all times. A relative or
friend may accompany you in the scanning room, if desired.
-
During the scanning you will
hear loud sounds. Earplugs are available on request.
-
You should breathe normally and
keep still during the scan. The test could take from thirty
to ninety minutes.
